FRONT PAGE STORY IN TODAY'S AUSTRALIAN NEWSPAPER (November 17, 2021)
. . . is really about the right of an Australian citizen - who identifies as Christian - to publicly express his or her religious conviction that homosexual acts are a sin.
At the present time, any public disapproval of homosexual acts on social media or discussion forums - from a Christian sexual morality perspective - will see you run foul of Australian Anti Discrimination legislation.
As the front-page story puts it, in slightly less explicit terms:-
"Australians expressing reasonable and genuinely held faith-based views that might offend others might be sheilded from prosecution by state-based anti-discrimination tribunals, under a reworked religious freedom bill to be introduced to federal parliament next week"

(1) The Australian Christian Lobby is falling into a trap by supporting a bill named "religious freedom". The name of the bill should be changed to "Christian freedom". See some of the comments to understand this perspective.
(2) At the present time, there is a case going on in the Canberra anti-discrimination tribunal named KERSLAKE v. SUNOL. This is the most significant Australian case going on in the legal minefield that is *religious conviction* on the one hand, and *homosexuality* on the other hand. Excellent points all round. Australian tax payers footing the bill and we get zero representation. We all need to become High Plains Drifters.
This YouTube video put out by the respondent himself - in the current KERSLAKE v SUNOL religious freedom case - will give you an idea of the background.
Also, the description of the video clip on YouTube goes further into the religious beliefs that got the respondent into so much trouble with the LGBT activists, aided and abetted by the Canberra Human Rights Commission.
So far, it has cost the responded, Mr Sunol, over $55,000 in legal fees to defend his Tweets on the grounds of religious conviction. He's going to have to spend the rest of his life paying off this debt in small monthly instalments.
The case has cost the LGBT activists little money to bring about this vexatious litigation.
But it has cost the Australian taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars, in salaries and fees paid to staff & consultants to the Canberra Human Rights Commission and the Australian Capital Territory Civil & Administrative Tribunal.
This demonstrates the waste of taxpayer's money to prop up these complaint-driven tribunals.
This point is further illustrated by the abdication of these "human rights" bodies to defend the rights of citizens, and people who for whatever reason choose to not get vaccinated, during the current COVID phenomenon.
These "human rights" bodies are complicit in the creation of a new marginalised and vilified minority called "the unvaccinated". Many members of the public are inciting contempt and hatred of this minority of Australian citizens, without any intervention on the grounds of anti-discrimination legislation.

Professor Mirko Bagaric is a professor of law and author of books. He did his PhD in law, on the issue of sentencing and punishment.
In 2005 he wrote an article on "the case for torture" in the context of the "war on terror".
Now, in this opinion piece he published, he is coming out as as a utilitarian, arguing that "human rights" do not exist for all people: they exist for the majority only i.e., for the "common good". This is a philosophical position.
Thus, if we wind the clock back to the days of the French Revolution, I imagine this professor would be a supporter of the ideas of Edmund Burke (1729-97) and oppose the ideas of Tom Paine (1737-1809) and his treatise "The Rights of Man"
The utilitarianism that the law professor is espousing in this opinion piece is that of Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832) and John Stewart Mill (1806-1873) i.e. the moral argument that "the common good" should prevail over the perceived "human rights" of the individual.
Professor Bagaric is making these arguments in the context of the draconian laws put up by the government of Dan Andrews in Victoria, Australia, in relation to the brutal "covid" lockdowns. This legislation in Victoria gives the lie to the concept of "universal human rights".
He makes the correct observation that all the Australian state and federal Human Rights Commissions and Anti Discrimination Boards have made not a single squeak about protecting the human rights of individuals whose freedom of movement & association, and right to control their medical treatment, has been ruthlessly crushed by the government "covid" edicts.
This, he argues, is proof that individual "human rights" do not exist, and so the waste of taxpayer's money on the bureaucracy should be stopped.

They are the arguments used by Stalin during his purge, and by Mao during his Cultural Revolution.

The reason why "religious freedom" is not a good thing for people who identify as Christian, is in the definition of "religion" in Australia.
The staff on the human rights commissions and the anti discrimination tribunals are, generally speaking, woke leftists who hate Christianity, and who believe Christians are ignorant bigots towards certain sexually deviant minority groups.
So how they will use "religious freedom" laws will be to further their agenda to persecute and bring vexatious litigation against Christians.
They will do this by defending the "religious convictions" of evil satanic cults like Ordo Templi Orientis to target Christians who offend such cults that have been defined as a religion in Australia.
